Me and my wife have given this Sonny's location several chances. I have had three times I have ordered food to go and had missing items from my order all three times. I called the store each time to complain and the manager I spoke with each time, didn't really seem to care. In addition, the food when ordered to go is much lower quality then the food served in the restaurant. Example my fries were old and cold and looked like they were left over from lunch. Today my wife and I again gave this location a chance, and this will be our last time eating at this location. First the server paid very little attention to our order, we were missing items from our order and charged for items we did not order or receive, and we received no drink refills. I know being a server can be a though job. I worked as a server for 9 years myself, however certain things have to be right in order to satisfy customers, and get them to return to your business. I don't understand, this Sonny's location in the early 2000s was one of the best, but now I can honestly say they are the worse location I have eaten at. If you like Sonny's and want a good experience, I would recommend the Sonny's in palatka.

I like this location especially before a big shopping spree at the outlet malls. The staff was courteous, our big, strapping waiter was as gentle and friendly as a lamb. We made sure to leave him a big tip for his service. The food was classic, but my pork ribs felt tad bit tough, but I happily ate everything on my plate. The servings are generous for the price one pays. The corn nuggets, my favorite, were perfect and piping hot. The coleslaw and baked yam were just right. The sweet tea and un-sweet tea are very good. The only main problem was that all of the high chairs were broken. My energetic 9 month old wanted to climb out every chance she could get and it was annoying to constantly grab her. If the straps worked, our experience would have been better. So, they lose a star for tough ribs and another for broken high chairs, but all in all, I like this place and it's A-OK for anyone who wants classic southern food. I would certainly eat here again and invite my friends and family.

Excellent food! Hubby had sampler platter as he couldn't decide on a meal. Great way to try a bit of everything! Pulled pork was the best I've ever had.

Honestly, I regret going in at all. I've been to Sonny's before and while it isn't my favorite barbecue place, I usually know what to expect and it beats going to a drive thru, but tonight I actually got up and left which is not something I ever do. The restaurant was less than half full at 7pm on a Saturday night. I sat for 50 minutes with no food except an order of corn nuggets that were cold. Drinks weren't refilled and I have two well behaved kids that had politely asked. The server was all over the place, talking to the cashier and running back to tables to say they were out of potatoes sweet and baked, egg rolls, and okra. We had to ask for the salad bar plate and it looked like it had been hours (maybe lunchtime) since it had been restocked and straightened up. If you want good bbq in a family friendly environment with fast attentive service, go around the corner to Mojo's. This place is a bust and there are many restaurants within 5 minutes that could do better.

I am a Montreal girl, who is obsessed with finding the perfect BBQ seeing that we hardly have any here, when I go to the states, I need to try it where ever I can. I had read about Sonny's on yelp and heard about it from friends, so when I happened to drive by it, the hubby and I decided we'd have to try it out. Only to be terribly let down. The ribs were tough, the beans seemed to have the same taste as the sauce in Chef Borardi, and the pulled pork was seriously dry and lacking of any taste. There was no proof that the meats had been smoked for hours, no smoke rings, no smokey flavor. Just a lump of pulled meat on a bun. What I could say was that the cornbread was yummy. Ate the whole thing. If you are new to BBQ and want to try some I guess this would be alright, BUT if you just go down the road there is a BBQ placed called BONO'S BBQ PIT which is my number one favorite!!! The meat was mouth watering! The rubs just delectable! The sides were scrumptious! Pass Sonny's down and go to BONO'S!

I love this Sonnys they have the best salad bar, and big drink, very relaxing, and very friendly staff. :-)

Went to a Sonny's BBQ on a previous visit to the Gulf Coast and was pleased to find these restaurants in the Orlando and Atlantic Coast areas. Ordered the chicken (tender and juicy) with a choice of two sides. I regret not getting the BBQ beans (the green beans were the 3-bean marinated style), but the steamed broccoli was a good choice. The beef brisket was another tasty menu choice. Four different BBQ sauces were available on the table, so you could try them all.

Love bar b q. One of my favorites

Not usually a fan of 'chains' -- but this is a case where the staff and management go way past the usual chain normalities and exceed them. This has become a regular lunch stop and while the place can be REALLY busy at the noon hour, the staff is nearly always pleasant, attentive, and does a good job of working through the chaos. VERY good baby-back ribs and sliced pork have distinguished themselves and the corn bread rocks. This is a good place... period.
(4)Kim M.
Great food and service. I was skeptical of ordering shrimp at a barbeque place but they advertise local shrimp on Mondays... It was very good. Our server was pleasant and professional. I will visit again when in St Augustine.
(5)Zachary C.
Great food, friendly atmosphere great place to go, love going. Love the pulled pork and all you can eat. Recommended for anyone local or visiting

Oh where do I start with this one? This Sonny's and the Sonny's location on SR16 in St. Augustine are apparently franchises and it shows. I've been avoiding the Sonny's BBQ on SR 16 for a while as I have had nothing but subpar experience. So, when in St. Augustine and in need of low end BBQ I would end up at this US1 location. My most recent visit will probably be my last. I had a sliced pork sandwich big deal and my colleague had a pork dinner. The food this time was as usual, so so. My fries were hot, but the sliced pork was tough and dry. However, this review is more about the experience than the food. The food and price is the reason locals call Sonny's the McDonalds of BBQ. The service was downright decent until... I went to pay the check and offered up $5.00 discount card which I had received in the mail from Sonny's Corporate. I did not realize it was not considered official tinder at ALL Sonny's locations, but in no time I was schooled on how this location and the one on 16 were NOT part of that Sonny's. I clarified that it was obviously the franchisees choice to not honor the discount and moved on. As I knew saving $5 was not an end life issue and I could use the discount another time, closer to home, I handed the waitress my cash and said, no problem, don't worry about it, here you go. The waitress goes away for a few minutes and then some manager/owner authority comes out and tells me that he has never ever seen one of the $5.00 discount/thank you cards, but will now honor it. I respond, ok, great, fine, whatever. Shortly thereafter, I do not know what transpired behind my back, but the waitress (who had been perfectly kind and accommodating up until this point) returns with my change and literally blows by our table, slamming my change down. It was beyond obvious she was now steaming mad. Let's just say the situation turned instantly awkward. Though I probably should have changed my mind, I still left a 20% tip and got out of dodge. All I can discern is that the owners of this location have some trust/control issues. I've since had multiple friends tell me that they are not surprised by my experience at this location they have had similar. Check it out for yourself. When you sit in the dining room you can count over 10 security cameras watching you eat. (Most restaurants have one or two at most, if they have any) If the proprietors have that many cameras in the dining area, I cannot imagine how Orwellian the back of house is. The neighborhood is not bad enough to justify such surveillance. My guess is they will have you hauled off by the local PO if you steal a Captain's Wafer off the salad bar. As St. Augustine has such a high population of migrant vacationers, the once-and-done crowd should be sufficient to keep this location going. However, if you are local, there is better food and service to be had. If you want great Sonny's BBQ, go to the one in Starke, FL. The difference will astonish you.
(2)Andrew V.
Absolutely disgusting. Would of been better if they gave me enough sweet sauce. I spent $14.00 for 1 carry out chicken dinner and they gave me two packets of sauce. Thanks for proving how cheep and disgusting your restaurant really is. Here's a hint for the future, if someone asks especially for sweet sauce, twice!!! Let them know about your 2 packet policy, before you let them drive all the way home thinking they have enough sauce to cover the microwaved chicken. If I were you, and was considering eating at this sonnys , I would seriously consider eating dirt first!
(1)Laura V.
Excellent Ribs and they have awesome thinly sliced pork. The food is served promptly which is great when you are on your lunch hour. The servers are always incredibly nice and friendly HOWEVER......I am giving it a 3 star review because they have a major violation in my book of standards. Despite the fact that they are the ONLY Salad Bar in the greater St. Augustine area, they are cutting corners and are using the same cheapie oil you fry your food with instead of Olive Oil!! So, if you want to enjoy the Salad Bar and like Oil and Vinegar in your Salad, I strongly suggest that you stop by Winn Dixie and pick up some Extra Virgin Olive Oil on the way. I highly doubt that the owner uses Frying Oil on his salad when he is at home. Why is it ok for his customers? (I will be happy to revise this review if I return and actually find real Olive Oil at the Salad Bar)
(3)Austin M.
Sonny's has gone downhill over the years. When I was younger the feast for four meal came with a gallon of sweet tea. Now you only get half. The ribs now have a weird glaze on them that I don't like especially when compared to the original smoked ribs they used to have. In addition, the Sonny's on SR 16 gives you four sides with the feast for four and this one only gives you three. So it has gotten worse and the price has gone up. That being said, there are some good things about it. The pulled pork big deal combo is amazing. The baked beans are delicious. Cole slaw is really good. And of course they have great sweet tea.
(3)Jeremy S.
We found ourselves in Sonny's on a rainy day in St. Augustine. We searched all over for something open that didn't have a long wait. Did I mention it was a Sunday? Apparently a lot of places are closed there on Sundays. We sat down and ordered our food. Both my wife and I got the Carolina Pulled pork sandwiches. They consisted of pulled pork topped with "slaw." They were very good. I found myself wanting to go back later that night for more. I tried my daughters chicken tenders, as she wasn't interested in eating, and they were also delicious. Even my son ate all of his pulled pork. I would definitely recommend Sonny's to anyone especially if you have kids. I give them 4 Doubledays only because I've had better BBQ before.
(4)Matt M.
ribs were decent. everything else was mediocre. sides were horrible. Will not return.
(2)Dan B.
Horrible experience, another perfect example of the unreliability of Yelp reviews; it's unfathomable that anyone could give this place four or five stars. This is a highly unprofessionally run establishment. To be fair, I can't say how the food tastes, only how it looks, which is sickening. I ordered for takeout pulled pork with vegetables, mashed potatoes, and cornbread. After 15-20 min., I inquired about my order and was told it would only be a few more minutes. After close to 40 minutes my order was finally ready, except it wasn't my order, they gave me sliced pork, not pulled pork...a pretty big difference between the two. Not only that but the food looked absolutely terrible. The pork looked dry and gristly, the sides looked bad, and a year old dog biscuit looked more appetizing than the dried and burnt cornbread. Given that i had waited an excessively long time, they got my order wrong, and the food looked fit only for the dumpster, I cancelled my order and got a refund. This is why I don't know how the food tastes, but based on how putrid it looked, I'm glad I didn't taste it. Avoid this place, you're better off going almost anywhere but here, including the pet food aisle at the grocery store.
(1)Shirley N.
This is a great place to go to satisfy your BBQ cravings! Fresh salad bar & food, clean restaurant, & staff are very nice! I met the owners personally and they are such a sweet family!
(5)Katie C.
Great food! I love the variety of sauces and condiments too! Yummy yummy. When we walked in every staff member that walked by welcomed us, I thought that was really nice, felt very welcomed. You get so much food for the $$! My husband and I each had enough leftovers for a secod meal. Their sweetened tea was great and they een let you take "to go drinks" which was a new thing for me to hear. We only have a few days left of our vacation and this will be the only restaurant we go to twice. Enjoy!!
(5)Ayanna B.
My boyfriend and I are oddly picky about BBQ. We absolutely loved Redbones in Davis Square (Cambridge, MA). We drove from St. Louis to Florida, hitting up a bunch of BBQ spots so we'd know what was out there. Then we got to Florida and our 'okay' choice was Bono's... mostly b/c it was in the plaza with our Publix. Then one day, it was closed. In a blind rage we got in the car and drove to US1 looking for the other one, instead we stopped into Sonny's on our way to Target. SONNY'S IS AWESOME!!! Sonny's is affordable. Sonny's sauces are excellent. Sonny's salad bar is... a'ight. Sonny's gives you too much food. The staff is sticky sweet and friendly. This is not a place for vegetarians. At all.
(4)Jeff S.
Every time I come into town to visit, a stop at Sonny's is a must. We pick up a bottle of sauce to bring back on the plane. The food is outstanding comfort food and you get an enormous portion for really cheap!
(5)Leigh N.
The service started out a little slow as in we waited for about 10 minutes to get seated, and no they were not busy, then we waited another 10 minutes for our drinks. Things began to look better when we got our food and took the first bite. It was great! I am usually really picky when it comes to BBQ and I have to say that Sonny's had some of the best pulled pork I have tasted. They are all over Florida so I am hoping the ones near my neck of the woods have that same great flavor.
(4)Kat T.
Angelo B. hates this place, but I dunno why - sounds like he hit a bad day. It's a Sonny's. Which means it's not quite as good as going to a mom & pop rib shack somewhere out on the back roads, but it'll do. The 5 different sauces (Sweet, Sizzlin' Sweet, Smokin', Mild, and Mustard) are decent - better than the meat, which is nothing to complain about. We usually get the salad bar as well - it's not like the sort of salad bar I grew up with in SoCal, but for the South, it's pretty good. They generally have a pretty good turkey salad in the mix, as well as some pickled okra. (It's not easy to find good salads in the South, and especially in St. Augustine.)
(4)Mike M.
This is five star food. Unfortunately our waitress wasn't equal to the food on our visit, so therefore only 4 stars. We had pulled pork which was perfectly cooked with burnt ends mixed in, the sauces were great, and the beans had meat in them. People say my smoked pork butts are the best ever, but fortunately they live a long way from Sonny's.
(4)Steph C.
Very Good barbecue! The pulled pork is wonderful and the smoked chicken is quite tasty. Nice staff and inexpensive meal.
(4)Anthony A.
Renee was awesome, but she was all that was any good. The food (meat) had obviously been prepped earlier, and then microwaved prior to serving. The meat was greasy and cold. Neither is good. I will give them one more chance, and if not 100% better, I'll never go back. My wife had the salad bar with a side of pulled pork, her experience was similar. This is sad because this Sonny's, unlike the one on 16, has been solid for the last 5-6 years we've been eating there.
(1)Marty L.
We hadn't been here in years (I'm from Texas and it's embarrassing ) but we went over the weekend. It wasn't as horrible as I remembered but still not a great excuse for bbq. Smokin' D's is about the closest you'll find around here for real except for my neighbor on Riberia who occasionally sets up and sells on a Saturday. I am shocked to see that Sonny's had 4 stars on yelp. Very sad...
(1)Dagwood S.
Great stop for lunch with really good food and super nice staff. No frills BBQ along the road. We were in the area and Yelp pointed us to them, great find. I like the vast selection of the BBQ sauces so everyone can have when they want. I had the Pork plate special with baked beans and slaw..very good.
(4)Matt S.
Sonny's Kicks Ass! The staff here is unbelievably good. When you walk in you're greeted by almost everyone within eyesight. You're drinks never become empty, and anything you need is brought quickly. You have a few options for the food here- you can eat in the restaurant, there are quite a few booths and tables; you can call in and pick it up; or you can place an order at the take-out window and wait until it is ready. The food is what makes Sonny's, though. The barbecue is f'n unbelievable, from pulled pork and chicken, to the chicken and ribs platters, to the sandwiches... it's ALL good here! The sides are awesome, mac n cheese, baked sweet potatoes, coleslaw, baked beans, garlic bread, all delicious compliments to your main course. The sweet tea is almost legendary. Salads are so-so, but if you're eating here, you're here to eat meat, not have some hippie bowl of veggies. The value of the food here is astounding, you get SO much food for the price you pay... I always seem to over-order, but it's always nice to have leftovers. For around 10 bucks you'll get a HUGE plate of BBQ, a couple of sides, garlic bread, and a drink. Can't get better than that. They even sell bottles of sauces that you can take with you. There's about 6 different sauces, and all the bottles are on the table with you if you eat in, so you can try each one out. NEVER had a bad experience here, if you're looking for good-ass BBQ, it's here at Sonny's!!!

GREAT bread... and thats it. bland BBQ sauce, and quite a nasty establishment. gross floors that havent been mopped in weeks i assume. this place would get 2 stars justfor having good ribs (which they do) but its so gross inside that i would give a -1 if i could. stay away!!

Exceedingly disappointing for Sonny's. I would never return to this particular location.

Great food + great staff + clean atmosphere (especially for BBQ) + large portions & good "Bang-4-Buck' value = 5 STAR BBQ.!!! Sweet tea is always perfect too. ~JR~

Expect the same Sonny's fare as everywhere, only extra crowded. Missing doors on bathroom stalls and leaky pipes leaving puddles from who knows what in both the Gent's and Ladies' puts this one on the "avoid" list.
